SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE
Questions & Answers
What Are the Most Common STD's?
Nine of twenty-five widespread sexually transmitted diseases researched:
Can Condoms Protect Me?
The government released its findings in a July 2000 NIH report with the admission that "there is no scientific evidence that condoms prevent the transmission of most sexually transmitted diseases. The report concludes that there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that condoms provide universal protection against gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, chancroid, trichomoniasis, and genital herpes.
Studies suggest there is no protection offered against human papilloma virus (HPV), the most widespread STD and the cause of most cases of cervical cancer. Condoms are 85% effective in protecting against HIV/AIDS, and offer some protection for men, but NOT women, in contracting gonorrhea. Susceptibility to contracting HIV is increased if the individual has another STD.
Results: "Condoms afford girls and women categorically NO protection from 7 of the 8 STDs studied, even when used faultlessly 100% of the time."
Is Oral Sex Safe?
No, STDs of the mouth, tongue and throat can be contracted.
Is There a Way to Have Safe Sex?
Yes, but it requires patience and self-control to find that potential lifetime partner. True safe sex occurs when two non-infected people have sexual relations with each other and remain in a monogamous relationship. Often, people choose to engage in sexual activity prior to a lifetime commitment and find that when their first sexual relationship ends they have lost that "Safety" zone and are faced with the fact that they now will begin to multiply their sexual partners and introduce all risks involved with being exposed to a new partner.
Basically, when you change sex partners you are not just exposing your sexual health to that person, but you are being exposed to every person they have ever been exposed to as well. There is a very common phrase about condoms protect and make sex safer. As mentioned above, condoms can reduce SOME consequences to sexual activity. Reduction is admirable but most people want elimination of STD's rather than reduction. It is impossible for a condom to guarantee elimination of STD's, which is why many people are choosing to wait for that mate whom they commit to in marriage.
